A homeless man died this morning (Friday) on Calle Sor Simona, in the Canódromo area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, after reportedly suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest. The victim was born in 1972 and was known to be living rough in the neighbourhood, according to the National Police.

Emergency services were called, and witnesses saw several ambulances arrive, but the man could not be saved. Police sources say early indications point to a cardiac arrest, although a full autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. Officers secured the area while investigators gathered statements from nearby residents.

The incident shows the ongoing challenge of homelessness across the Canary Islands, where rising living costs and a shortage of affordable housing have left many vulnerable people without stable accommodation. Authorities have been expanding support measures, including the rollout of the Housing First initiative in parts of Gran Canaria. This programme provides homeless people with access to supervised apartments alongside medical, psychological and social support, aiming to break the cycle of living on the streets by offering stable accommodation before addressing wider personal issues.

Local charities, including Cáritas, continue to report mounting pressure on shelters and support networks, urging greater investment and long-term strategies to prevent further tragedies like this.
