The "El Majorero" water taxi, which operates the route between Corralejo and Isla de Lobos taking holidaymakers from Fuerteventura to the beautiful island off the coast, has sunk today with a full complement of passengers on board.
It put out a call for help just after midday today saying that it was taking on water and was starting to sink, so two other boats that also regularly cover the same route, the "Celia Cruz" and the "Isla de Lobos", responded and helped evacuate the passengers to the safety of their vessels.
Currently, the "El Majorero" is anchored at Playa Concha Beach on Isla de Lobos with no one on board. Although not officially confirmed, all indications suggest that started to take on water after one of the glass windows in the hull, designed to allow viewing underwater, grazed against the rocks on the seabed.
The breakage is believed to have occurred near the small pier on Isla de Lobos, resulting in no injuries to anyone involved.
