61-year-old woman drowns at Costa Calma beach

A 61-year-old woman tragically lost her life yesterday afternoon (Thursday) at Playa Esmeralda in Costa Calma, Fuerteventura, despite the efforts of beachgoers who assisted her out of the water.

The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) has reported that they received a call at approximately 2:30pm reporting that a swimmer was in distress at the aforementioned beach.

Concerned members of the public on the beach had already managed to bring her ashore by the time emergency services were contacted.

As soon as they arrived, medical personnel from the Costa Calma Clinic attempted advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but their efforts were in vain. They couldn’t save the woman’s life and she was pronounced dead by the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) team who had also responded to the incident.

The Guardia Civil secured the scene and took custody of the body until judicial authorities arrived to initiate formal proceedings so it could be removed for official identification and autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
