Tenerife had the most rain in Spain yesterday and Teide has first snow

Yesterday (Friday) the weather forecast was spot on, and Tenerife had, not only the most rain in the Canary Islands, but led the statistics for rain throughout Spain! As forecast by AEMET, the rains were more persistent than strong, especially during yesterday morning. La Palma was affected, but to a lesser extent, and the adverse weather also brought the first snow to Mt Teide.

Although the snowfall was not particularly heavy, it coincided with TITSA bus’s announcement, that yesterday they were restarting their service from Adeje and from Puerto de La Cruz to Las Cañadas.

There were 80 incidents reported to the emergency services due to the weather, but fortunately, none were particularly serious. As usual, the rain highlighted how unprepared the islands are for downpours, with leaks, landslides, power outages, and huge traffic jams, in the same as England comes to a standstill when there is snow!

In Tenerife, the municipalities most affected during the rain yesterday morning were in the north of the island, particularly La Laguna, Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava, while on La Palma they were Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso, Tazacorte and Tijarafe.

Three flights were cancelled from Los Rodeos airport in the north of Tenerife due to thick fog, and just as many arriving were diverted to the South airport.

In summary, 6 of the 10 places in Spain where it rained the most yesterday were located in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Top of the list was Llano de Los Loros (La Laguna), with Agulo, La Victoria de Acentejo, Hermigua, and the airport of Los Rodeos also featuring with rainfall of between 35.2 and 48.0 litres per square metre recorded.
