A cayuco arrives in Los Cristianos with 57 occupants onboard including a baby

A Maritime Rescue boat escorted a cayuco to the port of Los Cristianos last night, which had 57 irregular immigrants onboard, including two minors, one of them a baby, and a pregnant woman, after it was spotted just a mile off the southwest coast of Tenerife.

Sources from the emergency service call centre have reported that there are 46 adult men, seven women, and two minors, all of them of sub-Saharan origin and in good health, although the pregnant woman was transferred to the Candelaria hospital for a routine check-up.

Maritime Rescue have confirmed that a boat raised the alarm after spotting the cayuco, and the Helimer 201 rescue helicopter was transferred to the area, followed by one of their own boats that was literally just around the corner having been involved in the successful rescue of three bathers in distress off the coast of Costa del Silencio in Arona.

After being guided to the port, the occupants were met by the Red Cross and medical teams for initial assistance, before being taken to the National Police reception centre for testing and, as far as possible, identification.
