A taxi driver has been intercepted by police in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after officers uncovered a string of serious offences, including driving under the influence of drugs and operating without the proper licence.

The incident took place on Sunday, 15th March, in the Puerto area, close to the popular El Muelle Shopping Centre, when Local Police traffic officers stopped the vehicle following concerns about road safety and public transport regulations.

According to officials, the driver was seen smoking while driving and was unable to provide the required authorisation to work as a taxi driver. Further checks revealed that the vehicle’s taximeter had not undergone the mandatory technical inspection.

However, the most serious offence came after the driver tested positive for drugs while behind the wheel.

Police confirmed that the appropriate legal proceedings have now been initiated.
