Two young Spanish men have been arrested after police discovered they had swallowed 550 grams of hashish in an attempt to smuggle it to Tenerife inside their bodies.

According to the National Police, the two passengers, aged 25 and 30, are repeat offenders with a combined total of 45 previous arrests. They had been under investigation for two months by the Drugs and Organised Crime Unit (Udyco) due to their frequent flights to the Canary Islands from Melilla Airport

As part of Operation Encina, officers carried out surveillance inside and around the airport to monitor the pair’s activities. The suspects were eventually detained in the departure lounge shortly before boarding their flight to Tenerife, which included a stopover in Madrid.

Both men were taken to Melilla’s regional hospital, where X-rays confirmed they had ingested 55 capsules of hashish, known as “bellotas” (acorns), wrapped in plastic. It took six days for them to expel all the capsules from their systems.

The seized drugs have been confiscated, and police believe the arrests effectively dismantle the criminal network to which the two belonged.

The case is now being handled by Melilla’s Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 3, where the men face charges of crimes against public health.
