Saturday weather: Calima and Strong Northeasterly Winds in the Canary Islands
Light calima, strong winds and slightly cooler daytime temperatures are expected across the Canary Islands this Saturday, according to latest forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency, AEMET. Daytime temperatures will fall slightly to moderately, while minimum temperatures will remain unchanged in the eastern islands and rise slightly elsewhere.
The haze caused by Saharan dust is expected to be generally light and mainly at higher altitudes, with the most noticeable concentrations forecast on mountain peaks and southern slopes of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as well as in higher areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The calima is expected to ease during the second half of the day.
Cloud and Rain Chances
Skies across most of the archipelago will be largely clear or mostly sunny, although some cloudy intervals are expected during the early hours in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
In the north and northeast of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, there will be periods of cloud cover with a low probability of light rain, clearing to brighter conditions during the middle of the day.
Strong Winds and Rough Seas
Winds will blow moderate to strong from the northeast, with very strong gusts possible on southeast and northwest slopes of the mountainous islands. Strong gusts are less likely but still possible inland and in the southern parts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
At sea, northeasterly winds of force 5 to 7 are expected, producing moderate to rough seas, becoming rough in El Hierro and occasionally rough in Gran Canaria. A north swell of between one and two metres is also forecast. Calima may remain present over coastal waters around Lanzarote and Fuerteventura until the evening.
Island-by-island forecast for Saturday 14th March 2026:
Lanzarote
Mostly clear skies are expected, with occasional cloud in the north. Light calima will be present, particularly in higher areas, before easing later in the day.
Minimum temperatures will remain stable, while maximum temperatures will fall slightly, with a more noticeable drop inland on southwest-facing areas. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, becoming strong inland with the possibility of very strong gusts, especially during the early hours in the southern half of the island.
General temperature range: Low of 16°C and high of 20°C.
Fuerteventura
Conditions will be mostly clear, apart from some cloud at the beginning and end of the day in eastern areas. Calima will affect the island, particularly in higher zones, but is expected to ease later in the day.
Minimum temperatures will remain unchanged, while daytime temperatures will fall slightly to moderately, with the largest drop expected on the western side. Winds will be moderate northeasterly, strengthening inland with possible very strong gusts, particularly early in the morning in southern areas.
General temperature range: Low of 16°C and high of 20°C.
Gran Canaria
Cloud is expected in the northeast below 1,000–1,200 metres, with a small chance of light rain before skies brighten later in the day. The rest of the island will remain mostly clear with light calima, mainly affecting mountain peaks and southern slopes.
Minimum temperatures will remain similar, with a slight rise possible inland, while maximum temperatures will drop slightly. Northeasterly winds will be moderate, with strong intervals and very strong gusts possible on southeast and northwest slopes, particularly during the early hours.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 21°C.
Tenerife
The island will be generally clear or mostly sunny, although cloud is expected in the north and northeast, where there is a slight chance of occasional light rain.
Light calima will mainly affect higher areas and southern slopes, easing later in the day. Minimum temperatures may rise slightly, while daytime temperatures will fall slightly. Weak frost cannot be ruled out on the highest central peaks.
Winds will be moderate from the northeast, becoming strong in low and mid-altitude areas on the southeast slopes and the far west, where very strong gusts are possible. In the highest areas, winds will be light to moderate and mainly easterly.
General temperature range: Low of 15°C and high of 22°C.
