More flights diverted and runway blocked at Tenerife North Airport this weekend

Yesterday afternoon (Sunday), dense fog forced the diversion of two flights destined for Tenerife North Airport due to low visibility caused by fog, as reported by AENA.

The two flights originated from Valencia and Gran Canaria and were redirected to Tenerife South Airport at around 5:00pm in the afternoon. At present, the airport is operating as normal.

Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) also reported that the runway at Tenerife North Airport was blocked earlier in the day yesterday for half an hour due to an incident with the landing gear on a small plane from the flight school, and the time it took to clear the runway.

According to ATC, the incident caused delays and more diversions of inter-island, domestic, and international flights from the North Airport to Tenerife South.

Finally, “after 30 minutes the runway was clear and we started sequencing traffic for approach and landing again," said the air traffic controllers.
