Hot Friday ahead as Canary Islands stay above 30°C

Residents and holidaymakers across the Canary Islands can expect another hot summer day today, Friday, with temperatures climbing above 30°C in many areas and tropical overnight conditions continuing in parts of the archipelago.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Gran Canaria will be the hottest island, where temperatures could reach 34°C in inland and mid-altitude areas. Fuerteventura is expected to see highs of 32°C, as both islands remain under a pre-alert for high temperatures.

The warm weather will also continue after sunset. In the hottest parts of Gran Canaria, overnight temperatures are expected to remain between 24°C and 26°C, making for another uncomfortable tropical night. Similar overnight temperatures are also possible in some areas of Tenerife.

Anyone planning outdoor activities is advised to stay well hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the midday sun, and take extra care if hiking or exercising during the hottest part of the day.

Sea conditions

At sea, moderate to fresh northeast winds are expected, strengthening offshore in parts of the southeast and northwest. Rougher seas are likely in exposed areas, while more sheltered northeastern and western coasts will experience calmer conditions with light breezes.

Island-by-island forecast for Friday 17th July 2026:

Tenerife
Tenerife will have cloud in the north below around 1,000 metres during the morning, clearing to sunny spells later in the day. The rest of the island will be mostly clear, with light calima over higher elevations. Temperatures will dip slightly in some inland areas, but parts of the east and the south could still reach 30°C. Tropical overnight temperatures of 24°C to 26°C remain possible in the warmest locations.

Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria will see cloud across the north below around 800 metres during the morning before brighter spells develop. Elsewhere, skies will be mostly clear with light calima affecting higher ground. Temperatures will ease slightly in some areas but could still reach 34°C in parts of the Tirajana basin, the southeast, and lower areas of Tejeda. Most southern and western parts of the island are expected to remain above 30°C.

Lanzarote
Lanzarote will be mostly sunny, although low cloud is expected in the north and west overnight. Temperatures will remain similar to recent days, with the southeast possibly reaching 30°C. Moderate to strong northeast winds are expected, with the chance of very strong gusts inland during the afternoon.

Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura will also enjoy mainly clear skies, with some cloud in the west overnight. Highs will ease slightly but are still expected to reach 30°C to 32°C, particularly in inland areas of the southeast. Strong northeast winds are forecast in the south of Jandía, where powerful gusts are possible later in the day.
