Gran Canaria’s interurban transport company, Global, is preparing to roll out its first 100% electric bus, unveiled on Thursday at Scania’s headquarters in Madrid, according to the Cabildo.

The new vehicle is a Scania BEV LE 4x2 LI; Castrosua 75CS, measuring 12 metres with capacity for 65 passengers (41 seated and 24 standing). It is expected to play a key role in lowering operating costs linked to fossil fuel consumption while eliminating associated environmental impacts.

A milestone for the fleet
This electric bus joins Global’s existing fleet of ten hybrid buses and one hydrogen-powered unit, the latter developed in collaboration with the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC).

The introduction of the new vehicle is especially significant because it will allow performance testing under real operating conditions on intercity routes. This includes assessing its true driving range, behaviour on different terrain profiles, and overall suitability for daily operations.

The findings will be essential in shaping future decisions on sustainable mobility, helping determine the best technologies for different routes, planning long-term fleet renewal, and guiding investment needs as Gran Canaria moves toward a modern, efficient, and environmentally aligned public transport system.

Gran Canaria’s councillor for Sustainable Mobility, Teodoro Sosa, emphasised that this is the first fully electric vehicle of its kind to operate between municipalities in the Canary Islands. He said that hybrid and electric buses represent the future of transport in the region, marking another step toward decarbonisation through the gradual introduction of clean technologies across the interurban transport network.

Global’s president, Manuel Suárez, said that this type of vehicle brings both economic and environmental advantages by cutting CO₂ emissions, reducing maintenance costs, and embracing new technological innovations in interurban mobility. He added that the move improves the company’s competitiveness and enhances its ability to deliver a more efficient and modern service.
