Experts reveal cockroaches’ secret hiding place in your kitchen — and you use it every day
Even though summer is over, cockroaches remain a common sight in many Canarian homes, thriving in the islands’ warm year-round climate. Now, a recent study published in the open-access database PubMed Central has pinpointed the most likely hiding place for these unwelcome visitors, and it’s somewhere you use every single day.
According to the research, “cockroaches prefer warm, dark, and humid areas within domestic environments.” That makes kitchen appliances such as ovens, microwaves, and toasters prime real estate for these insects, as they provide heat, food residue, and shelter, the perfect combination for infestation.
Warning signs of an infestation
Spotting the problem early can prevent a full-blown outbreak. Experts say to look out for:
- Small droppings or dark specks near appliances
- A strong, unpleasant smell in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas
- Shed skins or egg casings in cracks, drawers, or corners
- Dark stains or residues around the oven or microwave
The global pest-control firm Ecolab warns that cockroaches can carry harmful bacteria such as E. coli, salmonella, and dysentery, contaminating food and surfaces. In the restaurant sector, their presence can even lead to serious health violations or temporary closure.
How to prevent them
To keep your kitchen pest-free, professionals recommend:
- Regularly cleaning ovens, microwaves, and toasters — including seals and vents
- Avoiding food buildup and keeping appliances dry
- Ventilating the kitchen and sealing potential entry points such as drains and cracks
- Call a licensed pest control service if activity is detected
Although cockroaches are most active in warmer months, they don’t disappear when temperatures drop. Instead, they move indoors, looking for warmth and food. Consistent hygiene and regular appliance maintenance are the best defences against these resilient pests.
