Thick fog caused major disruption at Tenerife North Airport yesterday, Saturday, forcing the diversion of eight flights, according to sources from AENA, Spain’s airport operator.
The first affected flights included two from Gran Canaria, one of which returned to its departure airport, while the other was redirected to Tenerife South, along with a flight from Madrid, which was also diverted to Tenerife South.
Later in the day, additional flights from Fuerteventura, La Palma, Vigo, and Barcelona were also rerouted to Tenerife South Airport as poor visibility persisted.
Spain’s air navigation authority, ENAIRE, advised passengers scheduled to travel from Tenerife North on Sunday to check with their airlines for the latest flight status, warning that adverse weather and low visibility could continue to affect operations and lead to further safety-related delays or diversions.
Fog-related disruptions are not uncommon at Tenerife North, an airport known for its challenging weather conditions due to its altitude and proximity to the Anaga mountain range.
