Covid update: Incidence rates are falling for the first time since November

The latest data from the Ministry of Health notifies of 4,546 new cases of Covid-19 in the Canary Islands today, and 11 more deaths in the last 24 hours. Today’s number of new cases is 2,223 less than a week ago, and after two and a half months of the sixth wave, incidence rates are now falling for the first time since November 2nd.

There are now 93,489 active cases in the islands, with 586 Covid patients in hospital wards, which is an increase of 47 since yesterday, and 79 critical in ICU, which is a decrease of 6 since yesterday, but unfortunately only because they lost their battle and died.

All of the 11 deceased were aged between 64 and 99, with six deaths recorded in Gran Canaria, three in Tenerife, one in Fuerteventura and one in Lanzarote. The total number of people that have died is now 1,299 since the pandemic began.

The sixth wave, which has seen a constant and accelerated increase in the incidence of Covid, could have now reached its peak, as the incidence rate over 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants, the main scale used to measure the level of coronavirus infections, has decreased for more than one day for the first time since the beginning of November.

It dropped 91 cases yesterday after going from 3,397 on Monday to 3,306 on Tuesday, and has dropped again to 2,876 today hopefully indicating the start of a downward trend.
