Latest bizarre holiday accommodation: a hut in a garden with a bucket as a toilet

We are seeing more and more bizarre cases of different things being offered as tourist accommodation in the Canary Islands, which don’t meet the legal requirements as holiday homes, and yesterday another one came to the forefront.

In this instance, a reader of local Tenerife newspaper, Diario de Avisos, expressed their outrage after seeing what was being offered on a major rental platform online.

The advert is for a hut located in Vlaverde, in El Hierro, which according to the listing has "a garden, free Wi-Fi, and sea views." It is also classed as an "apartment" and is located in an area suitable for activities such as hiking or cycling, with "free private parking".

In reality, it is a shack with no door meaning that the bed is outdoors with just a curtain for protection, the kitchen consists of camping equipment, the shower is a hosepipe with no hot water, the toilet is a bucket, and the only furniture is a plastic table and two chairs in the garden belonging to the owner's house.

So far it has just one review which describes it as "terrible," although it does rate the staff who attended to them with a 7.5 out of 10. However, the bigger problem is that the online platforms are allowing listings like these for spaces which are clearly not licenced for guests.
