Cabildo initiates water supply restrictions in various areas of Tenerife

Balsas de Tenerife (Balten), a company under the jurisdiction of the Cabildo who manage water reservoirs on the island, have announced that they are introducing restrictions on the use of irrigation water in various areas of Tenerife, due to the water emergency declared by the Cabildo in March.

"The current situation of extreme and long-lasting drought declared on the island of in recent months, which is more pronounced in inland areas, has directly affected the reservoirs and water reserves available for irrigation, currently reaching historic lows”, they said,

“At the same time, the demand for irrigation water by farmers has increased significantly during the winter months, to cope with the exceptionally warm and dry conditions we have experienced since last summer," Balten stated.

“For this reason, we are forced to carry out modulations and apply temporary supply restrictions based on water availability for irrigation, in the areas indicated in the statement", they concluded.

The areas affected by these restrictions from today (Tuesday) are rural areas of the municipalities of La Laguna, Tacoronte, La Matanza, and El Sauzal, as illustrated in the map below showing the location of the affected reservoirs they manage:

Currently, supplies for domestic/human use are not affected but that could easily change as we head towards the summer.
