Explosive device deactivated in Lanzarote by bomb squad

The Guardia Civil were called to an unusual situation yesterday (Saturday) after a member of the public called them because they found an exploded bomb in in Caleta Caballo on the northwest coast of Lanzarote.

According to the official report, the device is a maritime signalling grenade measuring approximately 46 centimetres long and 7 centimetres wide. This kind of explosive contains a substance of high calorific power inside, which, once activated, generates a column of smoke, making it visible over long distances.

The Guardia Civil advises that if one is found, it should not be touched or tampered with and the authorities should be notified immediately. In this case, the person who spotted it called the Costa Teguise Guardia Civil, who activated the protocol for finding possible explosive devices, alerting the bomb squad.

Upon arriving at the location given, officers taped off and closed roads in the area due to the potential danger of the device, and carried out an initial inspection confirming that it was a large military maritime flare.

After this, the bomb squad neutralised the device, "ensuring the safety of the area and allowing the passage of people and vehicles once again," the report states.

Finally, the report emphasises that if anyone encounters something similar, it is advisable not to manipulate the device, to move away from the area, and immediately notify the Guardia Civil or the nearest competent security body or, failing that, to alert the emergency service call centre on 112.
