Spain welcomes an EU vaccination passport and wants it as soon as possible
The Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT) for Spain are welcoming the announcement of a European vaccination passport, and see it as the key to regaining confidence to travel and to reactivate demand in the tourism sector, urging it to be adopted as soon as possible.
After the virtual summit of leaders of the EU held yesterday, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that Europe will launch a vaccination passport in the next few months that will make it possible to travel within the EU in summer 2021 and, possibly with third countries.
The Spanish hoteliers association have considered that, thanks to the health security provided by the European vaccination passport, it will be a key instrument to regain the confidence of travellers and reactivate demand in the tourism sector.
"It is very good news that these types of mechanisms are being put in place that enable safe mobility to be activated throughout Europe, regardless of the tests that are established, the pace and evolution of the vaccination campaign," said the President of CEHAT, Jorge Marichal.
In his opinion, the sector has been asking for something like this almost since the beginning of the pandemic, as it is essential to control it "through the traceability of travellers and to enable tourism activity."
CEHAT consider it essential that all European authorities agree to draw up a document that includes all health guarantees and allows healthy people to travel to safe places, establishing health corridors.

The accommodation sector emphasizes that "this security is what will also allow local populations not to be afraid of their visitors being infected, since, through this system, there will be greater control and guarantees."
The European Commission has established three months to define the technical conditions of the passport and in this regard CEHAT insists that it is "very important" that this document, which aims to make the different vaccination passports that are being drawn up in the EU compatible, consider all the options and be flexible, but it is urgent that it starts as soon as possible.
