A 21-year-old airport worker has died following a serious accident on the runway at Gran Canaria Airport. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon when a baggage-handling vehicle he was driving collided with another similar vehicle that was stationary on the runway.

According to initial reports, the worker suffered a severe blow to the chest. He was treated at the scene by the airport’s medical team, stabilised and taken to hospital. Despite emergency surgery, he died a few hours later.

The man worked for a Spanish ground-handling company providing services to several airlines and had reportedly been in the job since November.

An investigation has now been opened to establish the exact circumstances of the accident.

Series of serious incidents at Las Palmas Airport

This is at least the fourth death linked to Gran Canaria Airport in the last year and a half. Previous incidents include:

  • The death of a 58-year-old worker in May 2024 after being struck by a road roller during runway maintenance works
  • The death of a British tourist in September 2025 after falling around 10 metres through an opening in the airport car park
  • A separate incident in which an armed migrant was shot dead by police after attempting to attack officers

The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns about safety in and around the airport’s operational areas.
