A woman in Corralejo has been scammed out of more than €30,000 after being tricked by a fake job offer circulated online. Seven people are now under investigation as part of a wider fraud network uncovered by the Guardia Civil.
The case came to light following a complaint filed in Fuerteventura, prompting an investigation led by specialist cybercrime officers. The operation, known as ‘Falwork’, involved multiple units working together to track those behind the scam.
According to police, the victim was approached via Telegram by people posing as representatives of a digital marketing company. She was initially asked to carry out simple online tasks, such as liking posts, leaving comments and taking screenshots, which helped build trust.
Once confidence had been established, the suspects allegedly persuaded her to transfer money from her own bank account to third parties. She was promised that the funds would be returned with commission, but instead lost over €30,000.
Investigators say the operation was part of a wider network running scams from several locations across Spain, including Las Palmas, Barcelona, Madrid, Gijón, Ourense and Ceuta. The group is believed to have used fake company identities to attract victims and move illicit funds.
Officers have identified the holders of the bank accounts used to receive the transfers and continue working to find all those involved. The case has now been passed to a court in Puerto del Rosario for further proceedings.
Authorities are urging residents and tourists to be cautious when responding to job offers on messaging apps or social media. Genuine employers will not ask for upfront payments or bank transfers, and any such requests should be treated as a warning sign.
