Woman arrested trying to smuggle cocaine into Lanzarote prison

A woman has been arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into Tahíche Prison in Lanzarote during a visit with her partner, who is serving time at the facility.

The discovery happened on Tuesday (27th May) during a routine inspection carried out by prison staff and the Guardia Civil, with the Local Police's specialist canine dog unit.

After being stopped and searched, officers found 18.5 grams of what is believed to be cocaine hidden in her clothes.

The woman told authorities she was trying to bring the drugs into the prison at the request of her partner, the inmate she had come to see. She was detained on the spot and taken into custody while police launched formal proceedings.

While a dedicated canine unit for Lanzarote’s prison service is still being finalised, officers from Tías Local Police have been assisting with sniffer dogs as part of a joint effort with the Guardia Civil and prison staff to ensure a strict zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking.
