Emergency teams in the south of Tenerife carried out a dramatic ten-hour rescue operation overnight after a paraglider fell into a steep ravine in Adeje last night (Tuesday 2nd December).

The alarm was raised at around 9:30pm when the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received reports that a paraglider pilot had crashed in Barranco del Salitre, a remote area with extremely difficult access.

Firefighters from Tenerife, specialist rescue units from the Guardia Civil (GREIM), the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), and the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were immediately deployed. They located the 28-year-old injured man, who had suffered a moderate leg injury.

However, after assessing his condition, crews determined that darkness made a safe evacuation impossible. Rescuers remained with him throughout the night, providing care while they waited for first light so a helicopter could airlift him to safety.

At dawn this morning, Wednesday, a GES helicopter lowered rescue personnel into the ravine, who worked alongside the teams already on the ground to hoist the man to safety. He was flown to the helipad at Adeje Fire Station, where SUC personnel were waiting to transfer him by ambulance to Hospiten Sur.

Authorities praised the coordinated effort, which ensured the man received continuous support throughout the long and challenging night.
