A person has died following a powerful explosion at a house in Tenerife, which sparked a major fire and sent debris flying into the street.
The blast happened at around 11:00pm on Monday night in the La Cuesta area of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, on Calle Verdugo y Massieu.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but firefighters were unable to enter the building at first due to the intensity of the fire and thick smoke. The cause of the explosion is not yet known and remains under investigation.
Local and National Police, along with crews from Tenerife Fire Brigade, were deployed. The shockwave from the blast caused significant damage and left smoke and rubble scattered across the surrounding area.
La Laguna’s councillor for public safety, Badel Albelo, said the area had been sealed off as a precaution because of the level of destruction. He confirmed the situation is now under control.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the person who died.
