A dramatic incident caused disruption on the TF-5 motorway in Tenerife yesterday afternoon (Wednesday), after a lamp post got blown over in the storm and landed on a moving vehicle near Los Rodeos Airport in La Laguna.
Emergency services were alerted at 3:55pm, when the Emergency Services Coordination Centre received reports of the fallen structure in the northbound lanes.
Despite the severity of the incident, no injuries were reported. The driver of the affected vehicle escaped unharmed, as did other motorists travelling along the busy route at the time.
The incident occurred during a period of heavy rainfall linked to Storm Therese, which continues to affect the island.
The fallen lamp post blocked part of the motorway, and combined with poor visibility and wet road surfaces, led to significant traffic congestion stretching for several kilometres.
Emergency response and safety checks
Traffic officers from the Guardia Civil were quickly deployed to manage the situation, while road maintenance teams from the Tenerife Cabildo are working to remove the debris.
Authorities are also inspecting nearby lighting structures to prevent further collapses due to strong winds and ongoing rain.
Motorists are being urged to take extra care when travelling on motorways during these conditions, including increasing stopping distances and, where possible, using alternative routes.
