VIDEO: Dutch hiker rescued after a 20-metre fall in La Palma

The emergency services were called to the Marcos y Cordero trail in Barlovento on Tuesday evening, where a Dutch hiker needed to be airlifted to hospital after falling 20 metres down a steep slope.

According to reports, the 66-year-old man had fallen in a remote and rugged area and suffered chest injuries, hypothermia, and multiple bruises.

His 60-year-old companion, also from the Netherlands, was uninjured.

Rescue crews reached the pair but were forced to wait overnight with them due to fading light, making an air evacuation too dangerous. Firefighters, Red Cross teams, and mountain rescue personnel stayed at the scene to monitor the man's condition until morning.

At first light, a rescue helicopter flew the hikers to La Palma General Hospital, where the injured man was admitted for further treatment. The emergency helicopter then returned to the hiking trail to collect the five rescue workers who had spent the night outside with the victims.
