UPDATE: Police search with dogs and drones for Jay Slater in barren Tenerife landscape

A search is underway for missing Brit, 19-year-old Jay Slater who disappeared in the Teno Rural Park yesterday morning (Monday), led by the Guardia Civil with agents from the Special Mountain Intervention Rescue Group (GREIM) and drones deployed across the barren landscape in the west of Tenerife.

So far, they have been focusing on the surroundings of Masca in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, as confirmed by sources from the Guard Civil to Europa Press.

Jay has been in Tenerife for a few days with two of his friends - Lucy and Brad - from England to attend the NRG festival, an event held at the Xanadu farm restaurant in Las Chafiras, San Miguel de Abona, that also included parties at the Papagayo nightclub in Las Americas and the Hard Rock Hotel in Playa Paraiso, as well as party boat trips.

His mother has travelled to Tenerife:

The last information that Jay's friends and family have about him, is that he contacted them at 8.50 yesterday morning saying that his phone battery was about to run out, he didn’t know where he was, and that he needed water.

They now fear that something may have happened to him trying to cross mountainous terrain like Teno on foot, especially in the hot temperatures on the island of around 25°C.

Jay's mother, Debbie, has travelled to Tenerife to try to locate her son while Lucy and Brad incessantly tour the area with local residents where they know he was last located due to his phone location before the battery died.

The search will continue as a helicopter is also being deployed to assist in difficult-to-access areas.
