Two housekeepers arrested for stealing €9,000 from holidaymakers in South Tenerife
Two employees at a hotel in the south of Tenerife have been arrested on suspicion of stealing €9,000 in cash from an Italian couple that were staying at the hotel. The women, aged 63 and 50, worked as a housekeeper and a deputy head housekeeper, and are accused of planning the theft after learning the couple’s daily routine.
According to reports, the hotel is thought to be the Sol Tenerife, in Las Americas. The couple are regular guests at the hotel and had hidden the cash in different places in their room to keep it safe. However, they had not imagined that the people behind the theft could be members of staff.
Police were called to the hotel after the theft was reported, and found no signs of forced entry or any disorder in the room. Valuables left in plain sight had not been touched, which immediately pointed investigators toward the possibility of an inside job.
According to the investigation, the cleaner assigned to the room allegedly informed her colleague, the deputy head housekeeper, about the hidden money. The two then adjusted their work shifts to carry out the theft without raising suspicion.
The suspects are said to have taken advantage of the couple’s routine. Each day after lunch, the guests would spend several hours sunbathing on the hotel’s sunbeds, which were visible from the room. It was during this time that the suspects entered the room and took the cash.
Following a detailed investigation, police were able to reconstruct the events through staff schedules, shift records, and internal hotel checks. Both women were arrested and brought before a judge on charges of theft.
The police highlighted the difficulty of solving the case due to the lack of physical evidence or witnesses. They praised the cooperation of hotel management, which helped piece together key details of the incident.
