Two people have died and two others were seriously injured on Sunday afternoon after the car they were travelling in fell down a hillside and into a ‘charco’ (natural pool or lake) in the south of Gran Canaria, according to reports from the Canary Islands emergency services.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:15pm, when the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received alerts informing them that a car had gone into the water in the area known as Charcos de las Tederas, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, with several occupants needing medical assistance.

GES Rescue teams and firefighters recovered the bodies of two men and rescued two injured women from the vehicle in the water. SUC paramedics treated both survivors at the scene.

A 47-year-old woman suffered severe multiple injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria, where she was admitted in a critical condition.

Civil Protection units also assisted at the scene, and the Guardia Civil guarded the bodies until permission was given for them to be taken for an autopsy.

An investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.
