An accident on Sunday afternoon caused major disruption on the LZ-2 between Yaiza and Playa Blanca in Lanzarote, after three buses were involved in a collision.
Two drivers were injured in the crash and were taken to hospital for further treatment.
The incident happened at around 2:38pm, affecting one coach from Lanzarote Bus and two from Intercity Bus. Because this stretch of road is one of the main routes in the south of the island, traffic quickly became heavily backed up.
According to initial reports, the accident may have occurred when one of the buses was forced to brake or reduce its speed abruptly to avoid a collision with a car that had allegedly overtaken illegally. This manoeuvre prevented the vehicles behind from stopping in time, resulting in a chain-reaction collision involving the three buses.
Local Police from Yaiza and the Guardia Civil arrived quickly to secure the scene and redirect vehicles. Drivers were sent along the LZ-70 while emergency teams worked.
Crews from the Lanzarote Emergency Services and Guardia Civil traffic officers then cleared the road and helped restore normal traffic flow.
