Thick fog has once again caused disruptions at Tenerife North Airport, forcing several flights to divert and delaying many others yesterday afternoon (Saturday). five flights were diverted to Tenerife South Airport, including two arriving from Madrid, after visibility around the runway dropped below safe landing limits.

Airport operations remained complicated in the evening due to the adverse weather conditions, which continued to affect approach and landing procedures. The fog has been concentrated in the island’s northern region, significantly reducing visibility and triggering safety protocols across the airlines.

AENA confirmed the disruption through its official channels, attributing the delays and diversions entirely to the weather conditions at Tenerife North.

A recurring issue at Tenerife North Airport

Tenerife North Airport, located at high altitude and prone to rapid weather changes, is particularly sensitive to fog and low cloud. These conditions appear frequently at certain times of the year and often cause delays or diversions, as aircraft cannot safely complete their final approach.

Saturday’s weather caused some flights to abandon their landing attempts and divert south, while departures and arrivals both experienced delays as crews waited for visibility to improve.

Such events typically lead to flight backlogs, longer waits on the ground, and operational reshuffling for airlines and passengers, especially during busy periods.

Advice for passengers

AENA is urging travellers to check the status of their flights with their airline before heading to this airport, as conditions can change quickly and further adjustments to the schedule may occur at short notice.

Despite the navigation systems in place, fog remains one of the biggest operational challenges for Tenerife North Airport, and Saturday’s incident is another reminder of how quickly weather conditions can disrupt air travel on the island.
