Tenerife is preparing for the most intense phase of Storm Francis this afternoon (Thursday), with authorities warning that the worst conditions are expected between 4:00pm and 8:00pm.
Strong gusts of wind and rain are already hitting the south of the island, particularly in Güímar and Santiago del Teide, and the sea state has deteriorated significantly along exposed coastal areas.
Officials are urging residents and visitors to take extreme precautions during this afternoon, avoiding unnecessary travel and securing outdoor items that could be blown by the wind.
La Palma: The Most Affected Island
La Palma remains under maximum alert, having registered up to 40mm of rain in an hour and a total of 90 mm in Puntagorda. Storm Francis has already caused travel disruption:
- One flight bound for Tenerife North was cancelled.
- Another arriving flight was diverted to Tenerife South.
Road access to Roque de los Muchachos via the LP-4 has been restricted, as well as the LP-109 and LP-214, both common routes for mountain races.
Authorities on the island are urging residents to stay indoors, avoid travel, and keep clear of ravines, slopes, and coastal areas as the storm continues to intensify.
With conditions expected to worsen into the evening, both islands remain on high alert as emergency services continue monitoring the evolving weather situation.
