A man died yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) after being rescued from the sea off the coast of Las Galletas in the coastal area between Los Enojados and Los Sanojados beaches in southern Tenerife.
Emergency services were alerted at around 2.00pm after receiving reports that a person was in difficulty in the water and required urgent assistance.
The Canary Islands emergency coordination centre (CECOES), immediately deployed multiple emergency teams to the scene, including firefighters from the Tenerife Fire Consortium, who entered the water and managed to bring the man ashore.
Once on land, paramedics discovered the swimmer was in cardiac arrest from the amount of water he ingested. Emergency crews carried out both basic and advanced CPR manoeuvres in an attempt to revive him, but despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers from the Local Police secured the area and assisted emergency teams, while the Guardia Civil took charge of the investigation and remained at the scene pending the arrival of judicial authorities.
The latest tragedy comes amid ongoing concerns over water safety in the Canary Islands, where dozens of drowning incidents are recorded every year.
