A 37-year-old man died from drowning yesterday afternoon (Sunday) at Famara Beach, in the El Papelillo area of Lanzarote. The incident occurred at around 4:00pm, when the Canary Islands Emergency Services Centre (CECOES) received an alert and immediately mobilised emergency teams.
Lifeguards pulled the man, identified as being of Romanian nationality, from the water in cardiac arrest and carried out resuscitation efforts for several minutes, but sadly, they were unable to save his life.
Local Police, the Guardia Civil, members of the Lanzarote Emergency Consortium, and medical personnel from the Canary Emergency Service (SUC) all attended the scene. Two helicopters were also deployed, one air ambulance that landed directly on the beach to provide assistance, and a second rescue helicopter which remains involved in an ongoing search operation.
Authorities are now searching for a second person who may have been in the water at the same time. According to witnesses, the deceased had reportedly been surfing with another young man whose identity has not yet been confirmed.
As of Sunday evening, it remains unclear whether the second surfer managed to reach the shore safely. The search operation will continue this morning.
