Mount Teide has seen fresh snowfall today, New Year's Day (Thursday), as Storm Francis continued to impact the western Canary Islands. The storm has also brought intense rainfall to parts of south Tenerife, according to the president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila.

She confirmed the update via social media and announced that the island’s Emergency Plan has been activated due to the severe conditions.

Access roads to Teide National Park were closed on Thursday afternoon, along with the cable car, which has suspended operations until conditions improve.

Dávila reported that further snowfalls are expected above 2,700 metres and highlighted that Santiago del Teide has already recorded up to 35 litres of rain per square metre.

Residents and visitors are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from risk areas, and follow all guidance issued by emergency services as the storm continues to move across the region.
