Residents of Parque La Reina in the south of Tenerife, are calling on the local council to close the municipal park at night, saying they are fed up with noise from late-night drinking gatherings (botellons) and illegal dumping of rubbish.
Local residents have also reported that some people are taking advantage of the lack of night-time supervision to dump furniture and construction debris, leaving parts of the area looking “like a rubbish tip”.
A former president of the local residents’ association, who still meets with the Arona Town Hall, said the neighbourhood is generally safe but problems arise during the night.
He explained that groups of young people often gather in the park to drink and smoke, while others leave unwanted furniture on the streets outside the official collection days.
Residents also point out that some nearby housing developments have not yet been formally taken over by the council, meaning they lack services such as proper street lighting, which can make minor crime and nuisance behaviour more likely.
Council commitment but no timetable yet
According to residents, the council has agreed in principle to close the park overnight, but no details have yet been provided on when or how the measure will be implemented.
In the past, the park gates were occasionally closed by the manager of the nearby cultural centre, but he did not have the authority to remove people from the area.
Neighbours say they hope the proposed night-time closure will reduce late-night gatherings and discourage illegal dumping, improving the quality of life in the area.
