The National Police have arrested a well-known repeat offender in Arrecife for allegedly breaking into a family home whilst they were asleep inside it, just four days after being released from prison for similar crimes.

The incident occurred in the early hours of 3rd January, when the suspect reportedly forced open a window to enter a property in the Lanzarote capital.

While the resident and her son slept, he allegedly stole several valuable items, including mobile phones and games consoles, before quietly leaving through the front door, which had been left with the key in the lock. The occupants were not disturbed at any point.

The Local Judicial Police Brigade (BLPJ-UDEV) led the investigation and, through their enquiries, identified the alleged perpetrator as an individual with a lengthy criminal record for property-related offences, mainly burglaries.

He was detained two days after the break-in. At the time of his arrest, officers found him carrying items believed to be linked to other recent crimes in the area, including perfumes, a watch, personal documents belonging to others, and goods stolen from shops and parked vehicles.

All recovered items have since been returned to their rightful owners. The suspect has been placed before the court on charges of burglary in an occupied dwelling and theft. A judge has ordered his immediate remand in custody at the Tahiche Penitentiary.

The National Police emphasised the swift response of officers and reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding public safety and tackling repeat offenders, particularly in cases that threaten the security and peace of residents in their own homes.
