Several beaches across the Canary Islands were red-flagged yesterday due to dangerous sea conditions, but some holidaymakers in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, ignored the warnings and put their lives at risk by entering the water.

A video shared on Instagram by lifeguards ‘Socorristas Guardavidas Puerto de la Cruz’ shows two people defying the rough waves, prompting the lifeguards to denounce what they describe as reckless and irresponsible behaviour.

They explained that such actions not only endanger those entering the sea but also put rescuers at risk if they are forced to intervene. “This is the reason why we sometimes have to close access points: irresponsibility and recklessness, especially from holidaymakers,” the lifeguards said.

Authorities remind the public that ignoring safety warnings or accessing closed bathing areas can lead to fines of up to €500.

This is the latest in a series of incidents in Tenerife involving dangerous behaviour in the ocean, including people jumping from high rocks into rough seas. Officials continue to urge both residents and visitors to respect closures, follow lifeguard instructions, and prioritise safety when near the coast.
