Around 200 people took part in a protest yesterday, Friday, calling for the immediate suspension of construction work on the controversial luxury development Cuna del Alma in Costa Adeje, south Tenerife.
Demonstrators, representing various social and environmental groups, claim the project is illegal and accuse the developers of committing increasingly serious irregularities. Despite the protest, construction machinery continued operating under heavy police protection.
March through Playa Paraíso
The march began on Avenida Playa Paraíso, at the start of the road leading to El Puertito de Adeje, and continued for nearly two kilometres into the village.
Chanting slogans such as “less cement, more sense”, “tourism lives off the Canaries”, and “the Canaries are not for sale, they are loved and defended”, protesters passed areas marked by stark contrasts: on one side a luxury hotel, and on the other, informal settlements of shacks, tents, and caravans.
Previous fines and ongoing concerns
The Cuna del Alma project has been at the centre of heated debate about the future of mass tourism in the Canary Islands. In May 2025, the regional government fined the developers €229,500 for damage to archaeological heritage at the site.
Víctor Martín, spokesperson for the group Tagoror Permanente, said they have been monitoring the construction for 55 days and have documented “numerous breaches” without intervention from local or regional authorities or the environmental police (Seprona).
“The company’s strategy is clear: cause as much damage as possible and then argue that nothing is worth saving. But there is still time – if action is taken now, the ravine can be protected,” Martín insisted.
Calls for accountability
Protest organisers confirmed they have submitted several complaints, both administrative and criminal, citing “increasingly serious irregularities” by the developers.
They are demanding the immediate suspension of works, the full presentation of legal permits, and accountability from both Adeje Town Hall and the construction company.
