A 12-year-old girl has been placed under temporary care after police discovered she was living in poor hygienic conditions in a home in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The case came to light after a worker raised the alarm while carrying out repairs at the property.

The Local Police were called to the home in the Ciudad Alta area on 30th March after the worker reported serious concerns about the living conditions. Officers from the local protection unit attended and confirmed the situation.

Inside the property, police found large amounts of rubbish and a clear deterioration in hygiene standards. The girl lived there with her mother, who told officers she was unwell and that the water supply had been cut off due to a fault.

Officers also noted the child showed signs of poor hygiene, was wearing glasses with broken lenses, and had been sleeping on an armchair. Despite the conditions, she was attending school.

Due to the seriousness of the situation, the police informed the mother that the child could not remain in the home. A nearby neighbour has temporarily taken over her care while the case has been referred to social services and the public prosecutor for minors.

Authorities are now assessing the situation to determine the next steps.
