Police save baby’s life in supermarket car park in Tenerife
Officers from the Local Police carried out a dramatic life-saving rescue yesterday (Thursday) after a 14-month-old baby suffered a cardiac arrest in a supermarket car park in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.
The incident unfolded at around 5:40pm, when emergency services received a distress call reporting that the child had stopped breathing. A police patrol was immediately dispatched to the scene, where frantic parents and bystanders were already witnessing a deeply distressing situation.
CPR performed at the scene
Without hesitation, one of the officers took the baby and quickly confirmed she was in cardiac arrest. He immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), carrying out several cycles of chest compressions.
Thanks to his swift action and technical skill, the child regained vital signs, bringing immediate relief to those present.
Emergency dash to medical centre
Given the seriousness of the situation, officers made the decision not to wait for an ambulance. Instead, they alerted staff at the Añaza Health Centre and transported the baby there in a police vehicle, with her parents accompanying them.
Medical staff at the centre were able to stabilise the child before arranging her transfer to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria for further tests and specialist care.
Police escort ensures rapid transfer
To speed up the journey, Local Police organised an escort to clear traffic and ensure the ambulance reached the hospital’s paediatric emergency department as quickly as possible.
The baby remains in hospital under observation.
Parents thank officers
The child’s parents have since expressed their gratitude to the officers involved, whose rapid response proved critical.
The incident highlights once again the importance of first aid training and the ability of emergency services to act decisively in life-threatening situations.
