Police raid fake cannabis club in Veronicas and arrest two people

The National Police, in coordination with the Local Police of Arona, have successfully shut down a fake cannabis club in the Veronicas strip in the south of Tenerife that was illegally selling drugs to tourists. They were posing as a ‘non-profit making association’ for cannabis consumption among members, however, two people, identified as the leaders of the operation, have both been arrested.

The investigation began when officers observed a large number of people, mainly holidaymakers, entering and leaving the establishment daily as though it was a sweet shop. Many of these visitors were under the false impression that they were purchasing legal substances, misled by the information provided by those running the operation.

When police raided the premises, the suspects resisted arrest and even assaulted the officers. As a result, they are not only facing drug trafficking charges but also charges of assault and injury to law enforcement.

The premises were immediately sealed off due to serious safety violations, including a lack of emergency exits, which posed a significant risk given the high number of people going into the local.

During the raid, police seized over 180 marijuana joints, half a kilogram of cannabis buds, THC-infused edibles such as cakes and gummies, and vape pens containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active compound in cannabis.

These types of clubs often pose as non-profit organisations aimed at providing a private place for cannabis consumption for members. However, they are actually fronts for illegal drug sales, targeting tourists in the area and operating seven days a week, primarily at night.

The presence of such establishments has also contributed to an increase in related crimes, including theft and violent robberies. Criminals often collaborate, making it easier for thieves to hide stolen goods and exchange them for money within these venues.
