The Guardia Civil has arrested a Local Police officer in Mogán (Gran Canaria) for allegedly keeping cash fines that he collected from residents and tourists while on duty.
The officer, identified only as O.L.S.N., has served on the force in the area for more than 25 years. He was detained on Monday while working in uniform in the busy tourist area in the south of Gran Canaria.
The Guardia Civil confirmed the arrest but gave no further details because the case is under a secrecy order. However, sources say the officer spent the night in custody and appeared in court on Tuesday in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
He chose not to give a statement and has been released while the investigation continues. He is being investigated for the alleged crimes of abuse of authority and misappropriation of funds.
According to local reports, the officer works in the tourist department of the Mogán Local Police, normally on a 9:00am–6:00pm shift. Unlike most of his colleagues, he often patrolled alone. Investigators believe he may have used this freedom to demand cash payments from people committing minor offences, and then kept the money instead of recording the fines officially.
In 2024, the Mogán Council awarded him a medal for more than 25 years of service.
