Playa El Castillo becomes a non-smoking beach in Tenerife

The City Council of Puerto de la Cruz, through the Departments of Citizen Participation, Health, and Beaches, ran an online vote between September 12th and 25th about the creation of smoke-free zones on the Playa del Castillo beach, which resulted in the participation of 231 people, of which 173 (74.89%) were in favour of banning smoking 100% on the beach and making it completely smoke-free.

Councillor María Jesús Hernández, is satisfied with the promotion of the new platform 'Participa Puerto de la Cruz' among local residents, who have been able to get involved for the first time and participate in subjects and agendas for the area, that will continue to be made on the municipality’s website.

In this case, the interaction was open to residents over 16 years of age, and only 33 people (14.29%) opted for a 50% smoke-free beach, and 25 people (10.82%) to continue to allow smoking everywhere.

The Councillor for Health and Beaches, Alberto Cabo, said: "it has been great to have the involvement of citizens who have given a positive opinion about the initiative to create smoke-free zones on the beach, to promote a healthier lifestyle and the reduction of pollution on our coasts”.

With the result of this vote, Puerto de la Cruz is equipped with new tools to continue having the involvement of locals in decision-making for the progress and improvement of the city, said the town hall in a statement.
