Pickpocket arrested after viral video showing her stealing from tourists in South Tenerife
Agents from the Guardia Civil in Playa de las Américas have arrested a woman after officers identified her from a video circulating on social media that showed her trying to steal items from a tourist’s handbag in the south of Tenerife, as previously reported in the Canarian Weekly.
The investigation was carried out with support from the intelligence unit of the Comandancia de la Guardia Civil de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as part of Operación Miradores, an ongoing initiative aimed at preventing crime and increasing surveillance in busy public areas to protect both residents and visitors.
When officers identified the suspect, they discovered she already had a judicial arrest warrant in her name for similar offences. Following leads from the investigation, police tracked her down to a hostel in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, where she was detained.
During the arrest, officers also found that the hostel had failed to comply with its legal obligation to register guest information with the State Security Secretariat’s system. The premises were inspected and the relevant reports and sanctions were issued.
The detainee, along with the completed case file, has been handed over to the competent judicial authority to be processed.
