A major search operation is underway after a passenger fell overboard from the Marella Explorer 2 during its journey from Madeira to La Gomera on Thursday morning. The incident happened in the open ocean north of the Canary Islands, in an area known for strong currents and deep waters.

The alarm was raised mid-crossing, and the captain immediately stopped the ship and activated the international “man overboard” protocol. This involves reviewing CCTV footage, throwing marker devices into the sea, turning the ship to search the area, and alerting maritime authorities.

Maritime Rescue teams from Tenerife quickly began a coordinated search using several vessels, including the Salvamar Menkalinan, while the Guardia Civil’s maritime unit supported the operation. A helicopter also joined the search from the air. Despite intensive efforts throughout the morning, the missing passenger has not yet been found.

The fall is believed to have taken place in a difficult stretch of ocean where currents can move at up to two knots, which means the search area needs to be expanded rapidly. The depth of the water and the distance from land make the operation even more challenging.

Onboard the Marella Explorer 2, several outdoor decks have been closed while investigators examine video footage and speak to witnesses and crew members to work out how the incident happened. The ship remained stopped in the area for some time before being diverted from its original route. It is now docked in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The Marella Explorer 2 is operated by TUI. It is a 246.5-metre vessel sailing under the Maltese flag. It left Madeira on Wednesday afternoon as part of its scheduled Atlantic itinerary. Authorities have not yet released any details about the missing passenger, and the search is continuing.
