A bus driver was assaulted on Saturday, 23rd August, in Candelaria, after asking a passenger to leave the vehicle due to his aggressive behaviour. According to witnesses, the man had been insulting fellow travellers, shoving some of them, and frightening several children on board to the point that some began crying.
When the driver intervened and requested that he leave the bus, the passenger lashed out, hit the driver and snatched his name badge.
The incident was later reported by Los Jardineros-Tenerife, a collective that represents bus workers on the island.
Sources say that the attack may have been recorded on the bus’s onboard security cameras, which could provide vital evidence if a formal complaint is filed. In previous cases in the Canary Islands, video footage has played a decisive role in court proceedings.
Unions and driver associations, including Intersindical Canaria and Los Jardineros, have repeatedly warned about the rise in assaults against bus drivers, particularly at weekends or on busy routes.
On 16th July 2025, a passenger aboard an intercity bus in Lanzarote, travelling along Line 62 between Arrecife, Tías and Playa Blanca, attacked the driver after being refused an unscheduled stop. The assailant struck the driver in the face and even tried to interfere with the vehicle controls.
In May 2024, there was another heated confrontation in Tenerife, where a passenger and a bus driver engaged in a tense altercation mid-journey, unsettling fellow travellers.
This latest incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of public transport workers and renewed calls for stronger safety measures and protective protocols to deal with violent passengers.
