A paraglider has been seriously injured after attempting to fly in extreme weather conditions during Storm Therese on the coast of La Laguna in Tenerife. The incident, which happened this morning (Friday) at Punta del Hidalgo, could easily have ended in tragedy.

Despite warnings of hurricane-force winds exceeding 120km/h, the man launched from a coastal viewpoint before being destabilised by a powerful gust seconds after take-off. He crashed heavily onto rocky ground, suffering a double fracture to his tibia and fibula.

Witnesses said the outcome could have been far worse, as he landed just metres from the sea. A slight change in wind direction could have carried him into the rough waters below, where survival would have been unlikely due to his injuries and equipment.

Emergency services were quickly alerted, prompting a coordinated response involving paramedics, firefighters and the Local Police. The injured man was stabilised at the scene before being taken to hospital for urgent treatment.

The incident comes as authorities across the Canary Islands continue to warn of dangerous conditions linked to Storm Therese. Schools have been closed, outdoor activities have been cancelled, and the public has been urged to avoid unnecessary travel while weather warnings remain active.
