The Socialist Party (PSOE) in Arona has criticised the local coalition government of PP-CC-Vox for what it calls “passivity” in dealing with the increasing use of electric scooters, segways, and similar vehicles on pedestrian promenades, despite their circulation being prohibited under municipal bylaws.

According to the PSOE, the situation has become “unsustainable”, particularly in the busy tourist areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. Both residents and visitors have reportedly expressed fear when using the walkways, which were originally designed as safe, pedestrian-only spaces.

The party highlights that in recent months several accidents have been recorded, including collisions and falls, resulting in injuries to holidaymakers, local residents and even children. “This reflects the growing danger,” the PSOE said in a statement.

The Socialists also reminded the public that they had already presented a motion in September 2024 to regulate the use of e-scooters and reinforce public safety, but it was rejected by the governing parties. “During that debate, PP, CC and Vox simply made excuses about legal complexities and promised measures that have never materialised,” they added.

Councillor Mikaela Brito stressed that the walkways of Arona “should be safe spaces for both residents and tourists, but they have now become hotspots of insecurity where scooters and other vehicles circulate without control. Despite the municipal ban, this is not a minor issue – accidents have already happened and people have got hurt, including minors and people with disabilities.”

Brito also pointed out that Mayor Fátima Lemes’ tripartite government has been aware of the issue for more than two years. “We warned them in our 2024 motion that the lack of control over scooters would cause serious safety problems, and sadly, that is exactly what is happening now,” she concluded.
