The Tenerife Cabildo has approved the awarding of contracts for the construction of 120 new public housing units in the municipalities of Güímar and San Miguel, as part of its ongoing effort to address the island’s growing demand for affordable housing. This includes 30 homes in Güímar and 90 in San Miguel.
The island’s Vice President, Lope Afonso, said that these latest projects add to the 44 homes valued at nearly €10 million that are already planned for Los Realejos and Santiago del Teide. Together, these developments form part of a broader agreement between the Cabildo and the Canary Islands Government, through the Canary Islands Housing Institute, allowing for the direct construction of up to 257 public homes in various municipalities across Tenerife. The total investment for the programme is around €40 million.
The 30 homes in Güímar will be built at a cost of €5.43 million, while the 90 in San Miguel will cost €15.67 million.
Both Afonso and the Councillor for Housing, Sonia Hernández, said that these awards represent the largest public housing contract in Tenerife’s history. They said it marks a major step forward in Tenerife’s housing policy, turning promises into real progress on one of the biggest issues facing residents, finding an affordable home.
Afonso also said that the Cabildo is “taking concrete steps to fulfil the commitment made at the beginning of this term, to ensure the institution plays a leading role in helping residents overcome the challenges of accessing the housing market.”
