A car overturned on the TF-1 motorway yesterday afternoon, Sunday, causing major traffic delays in the south of Tenerife, tafter both lanes were closed while the emergency services dealt with the incident.
The accident occurred near Las Caletillas, heading in the direction of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and led to kilometres of tailbacks as emergency services worked at the scene.
According to the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES), paramedics treated a man who had sustained injuries in the crash.
The Guardia Civil took charge of the investigation, while staff from the Tenerife Island Council’s Roads Department worked to clear and reopen the motorway.
Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt in the incident.
Road safety reminder: how to act in an accident
Incidents such as this highlight the importance of knowing how to react when faced with a road emergency. The Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) stresses that the first few minutes after an accident are critical and can mean the difference between saving a life or worsening the outcome.
If you are ever a witness to a collision, the most important thing is to stay calm and follow the internationally recognised PAS protocol: Protect, Alert, and Assist.
- Protect: Ensure your own safety first, and prevent further accidents by signalling or securing the area.
- Alert: Call the emergency services immediately (112 in the Canary Islands). Provide clear details of the location and what has happened.
- Assist: Help the injured if it is safe to do so, without putting yourself at risk, and follow the instructions of emergency responders.
Sunday’s accident once again serves as a reminder of how essential it is for all drivers and passengers to remain aware and prepared when travelling on the island’s busiest roads.
